Disston No. 8 Gentlemans Half Back Saw Replica

  • $ 299.95

Alamo Toolworks is proud to present our replica of the Disston No. 8 Gentlemans Half Back Saw.  (I have no idea why they call these saws half backs because the back is never truly half as long as the blade is but what can you do?)

Anyway, this saw has the following features:

Handle material:  Honduran Mahogany.Screws are set in stainless steel bushings that pass through the blade and anchor it to the handle in reamed tapered recesses in each side of the handle.  These bushings are hand fitted one at a time.  Tired of having to re-tighten your saw handles?  My exclusive bushing system virtually eliminates the need!

Blade: 16" 0.035" thick at the tooth line 1095 steel.  Taper ground, hammer tensioned and cryogenically tempered.  Toothed 13 points per inch with 0.0025" set per side filed crosscut.  Rake angle of 21 degrees to account for the high-set handle with 20 degree fleam angle and 0 degree bevel.  Hand set and sharpened.  This is an ideal set up for working with the furniture woods such as walnut and cherry.  If you want this saw re-filed rip let me know before I ship it - no charge to change the filing.

Back:  1/8" thick folded brass.  I'm one of the few makers in the world that makes folded backs - most others use slitted backs and glue to make custom saws.  This method works great until you want to tune your saw or if you damage the blade - bend the blade of glued together saw and it's time to buy a new one.

The saw screws are ATW large size (9/16" heads and nuts) X2 plus the 13/16" medallion.

As far as I know I am the only saw maker offering cryo processed blades and handles secured with bushings.  The primary advantage conferred by cryotempering is increasing the toughness and scratch resistance of the blade.  Springs that are cryotempered maintain their tension longer and brake rotors that are cryotempered last up to twice as long!  Bushed blades are much less susceptible to becoming loose with seasonal variations in temperature and humidity.
